From the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, this coffee is produced by smallholder farmers cultivating 1 to 2 hectare plots across remote, mountainous villages. Coffee is a cornerstone crop in the region, providing essential income for thousands of farming families and supporting long-standing community-driven agricultural systems.

At 1,000–1,500 meters above sea level, Sumatra’s unique microclimates and humid environment encourage slow cherry maturation, contributing to the region’s signature depth, structure, and layered complexity. Farmers often hand-pulp and ferment coffee locally using traditional methods passed down through generations, while also investing in shade trees and soil stewardship to preserve long-term productivity and ecosystem health.

This lot is classified as Grade 1 Double Picked (GR1 DP), meaning it has been carefully hand-sorted twice to meet strict export quality standards. It is processed using wet-hulling (Giling Basah), a distinctive Indonesian method where parchment coffee is hulled at higher moisture levels than fully washed coffees. This process, combined with Sumatra’s climate, creates the region’s hallmark profile.

The result is a rich and complex cup with syrupy body, featuring notes of black tea, brown spice, and citrus, reflecting both the depth of Sumatra’s landscape and the craftsmanship of its smallholder producers.
