From Embu County, Kenya, this coffee is produced by approximately 300 smallholder farmers organized around the Ena Coffee Factory, part of the New Runyenjes Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS). The cooperative system gives farmers shared control over marketing, milling decisions, and profit distribution while supporting long-term community development.

At 1,600–1,800 meters above sea level, farms are planted in fertile volcanic loam soils that support slow cherry maturation and high-density beans with vibrant flavor clarity. Many farmers also grow crops such as corn, beans, and tea alongside coffee, reflecting a diverse and resilient agricultural system.

Ena Factory is one of three centralized wet mills within New Runyenjes FCS, alongside Kangundu and Nduuri. The cooperative provides agronomic training, sustainability guidance, and financial support, including pre-financing for farm inputs, labor, and even school fees to help stabilize household income throughout the growing season.

During harvest, cherries are delivered daily and carefully sorted for ripeness before being blended for processing. The coffee is depulped, fermented overnight, washed with clean water, and dried on raised beds for two to three weeks depending on climate conditions. Once dried, it is conditioned in ventilated bins to stabilize moisture before milling and export preparation.

The result is a bright and expressive cup with crisp acidity, smooth structure, and notes of cherry, grapefruit, kiwi, and caramel. It reflects both the precision of Kenyan cooperative processing and the complexity of Embu’s high-altitude volcanic landscape.
